Introduction

In studying the problem of the Holocaust you have met noble people who saved Jews from extermination. The most well-known are: Raul Wallenberg, Oscar Schindler and Irena Sendler. It has turned out recently that there was a man born in our town who is compared to Wallenberg, but at the same time his name has been almost unknown here: in our region, in Poland and abroad. The question is “Why has the name of one of the Righteous been blotted out of our national memory in the 60 years since World War II.?” In the times when opinions of Polish anti-semitism are widespread, Slawik’s attitude and sacrifice may serve to promote Poland’s good name.

Get into knowing this person and try to answer the following questions:

  • Who was Henryk Slawik?
  • Why has he been forgotten?
  • How can we keep Slawik’s memory alive?
  • Are the values respected and practiced by Henryk Slawik still up-to-date or anachronistic nowadays?
An attempt to solve the problems will be the best homage you can pay to a forgotten hero.
However, the most important aim will be to make Henryk Slawik well-known. The proposal is as follows: write a scenario and get the famous director interested in Slawik’s biography. It would be the most effective way of spreading the knowledge about Polish Wallenberg in our country and abroad. For better understanding of the Shoah, you will improve your historical knowledge in the Auschwitz Museum. During history lessons you will become familiar with a scientific approach to collecting and selecting materials.
During Polish lessons you will analyse the Holocaust in Polish literature and you will learn the rules of writing a scenario. Then, you will be working together in small task groups.
